Radicals (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

“He is bleeding compassion and murder, the softness in his eyes warring with a pure hatred so dark and terrifying I think I’ll fall face first into it and never be able to escape.”So I was thinking this book was self-published due to the great number of tiny mistakes and typos in this that would not be so common with a good editor. For example, there was a repeat of the 'affect'/'effect' typo in this second book of the series. Turns out it is self-published.Unfortunately, this book felt like a lot more should have happened in it. In the first half or two thirds, not that much really happened of much importance or relevance, it seemed to me. Plus we didn't get to see any fighting that's related to some key characters' new fighter ranks, annoyingly. It would have made for some great, tense scenes, similar to the scene where Kit is ranked in 'Halo', which is one of my favourites.I hated the insta-love. In the first book it wasn't so strong, but here, a month into knowing each other, the main couple are declaring their love for each other, saying they will never leave each other etc etc. Then comes the Edward-style 'oh no Bella, I'll only hurt you, I must leave you. Be with Jacob instead.' Argh. Then the inevitable, way too soon: 'I can't live without you, Bella. I was wrong. Take me back.'This brings me to the love triangle. It hurt me. Not to mention the very surprising twist that occurs early in the book. I don't think that was really necessary. Rose just wanted some awkward, angsty scenes, it feels like. I don't think it helped the plot.Which in turn was not slow so much as not paced quite right. There was some great action (those scenes are partly why I love this series) but there was too much soppy romance and angst and oh, also, Kit seems to have regressed and is now freezing up and crying and relying on Ryka way too much. Noo!Some of the writing though is beautiful. It is always easy to read, flowing, just absolutely a treat. I love it.James? I like how the author has written him, very very much. I'm a fan of Olivia's storyline too. But in the sequel there was not much focus on characters other than the protagonists, which is such a shame because the characterisation in the first book was just so good. Also, I feel like we're not getting enough answers and not getting enough done. Well. Middle-book slump I suppose. (I assume it's the middle book.)But this is still a great book which I really enjoyed, and if you liked 'Halo' I'd recommend continuing the series.OH! BUT - what really really really got on my nerves was the mistake in the calculation in the book. Let me say 6 + 12 + 8 + 8 + 4 + 1 does not equal 33. I don't think this is too hard a sum, not at all. Something like that is so easy to fix and is quite obvious, so why did nobody notice it?All the same, it's worth reading. Here's hoping the last book will be as good as the first; I have a feeling it might be. This book was far more interesting than the first. I was drawn back into the story of Kit and Ryka immediately and it felt like I had a deeper connection with them in this book compared to the first. There are a few plot twists in the book that I didn't see coming that pleased me in some ways and almost broke my heart in others. It was a good read and I look forward to reading the third book soon, hopefully.
