Radio Muerte: Novela (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

I started off enjoying this twisted horror (almost goth) story of Joaquin and how he came to be a late night radio show host. I quickly felt, however, especially in the middle of the story, that Mr. Gout was "trying to hard" to emulate Stephen King in his genre. And it IS his genre....no one can do it as well. By the end I was just confused. I did like the characters and the beginning plot, but the end just made no sense whatsoever. Everything up until that point could have been in his head, imagination, whatever, but somewhere along the way the thread of a cohesive story became unraveled. Ghost Radio is a thrilling and twisted story about a late-night talk-radio host, Joaquin and his decent into the world of ghosts. The book is born after Joaquin and another boy his age, Gabriel instantly become friends after waking up in the hospital together. Even when confined in the hospital, their rebellious attitudes lead them on daring adventures. Late at night, they tune into their favorite show, Ghost Radio. Joaquin finds inspiration in this show for his own Ghost Radio and after their release, the boys begin experimenting with a new punk band taking "found sounds" and arranging them into music.Gabriel's death leads Joaquin to listen even harder to the noises around him, hoping to find a hidden message from Gabriel. His contact with the outside world takes him inside a paranormal extravaganza where he is constantly being reminded of the song, "Kill the Poor". The song is a common thread that runs through Joaquin's life from the moment he meets Gabriel. When Joaquin's life begins to feel as if he were part of his nightmares, he suddenly looses his sense of reality and can't tell the difference between life and the lucid dreams he begins to have. The book is very creative, and fresh. The characters are so well drawn out that I feel like I know them personally. It's a beautifully written book, with lots of bone chilling moments that will leave you craving more.
