I honestly can't say how this book made me feel. Kind of like Kate, it was arousing, painful to read about, weird, confusing, hot as hell, but again weird. There wasn't really a full story her. Michael is part of a clan that links with mates in order to have strong, violent, but pleasurable sex. He's been away from Sanctuary (which I assume is where this group of Clan live) for a while searching for a woman that can satisfy his needs, with hopes of finding his mate. There isn't much information given about the 'Clan'. Actually ere is almost no real information about them. Where do they come from? How do they pick a mate? Why are they different from other people? How log have they been around? (Literally at a loss for this group of people). Then you have Kate. She is independent, loves her job, has a couple of close friends, but doesn't have any family that she can remember, and hasn't dated a man that's satisfied her in a while if ever. When Kate and Michael merits an instant connection for Michael, but takes the entire book to realize that she's Clan and his mate. Throughout the book Michael aggressively pursues her and begins teaching her about her ancestry, about what pleasures and pains she can take, and how she belongs to him. After what feels like forever and some pretty HOT, but weird and sometimes scary erotic scenes, Kate and Michael finally complete their bond and she's welcomed into her true family. This is literally the entire book. There are a few small scenes that take place, but after careful consideration I came to realize that they were unnecessary while certain vital information went missing. Unless you're looking for some pretty violent erotic sexual experiences that only highlights the merging of pleasure and pain, then this book isn't for you. I personally would have liked a real plot and a good back story. There was a level of weirdness to the story that bugged me. The hero, Michael, is "something". But what? Is he human with ESP or another species? Is he supernatural, alien, what? He is "clan" and he's from "Sanctuary". But we never know what all that means, beyond a group of people who are somehow mind-linked together (I think) and they like pain with their sex….that is, female submissive pain meted out by male dominants. There was too much emphasis on pain and lust and not enough on real love, IMO. I think the author was on the cusp of an interesting premise here but the story just didn't deliver. I didn't hate the story but found myself disappointed with all the unanswered questions and the lack of character development.
