Remembrance Of Things Forgotten: A Novel (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
Better than I thought it would be. *Read the description of the book---if you are turned off by any of the subject matter, pass. If not, it's a good read.* If you like time-travel and wondered what would happen if you could go back 20 years and meet your young self. One mistake though. The "past" portion of the novel takes place in 1986. While driving "Junior turned down the volume on Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy the Silence.'" Depeche Mode did not release "Enjoy the Silence" until 1990...4 years later than the past part of the novel takes place. Whoops. Other than that I enjoyed the ride. From the acknowledgments:"The first person I want to thank is Michael Carroll, who read a time-travel short story I'd written and told me, 'I think this should be a novel.'"I strongly disagree. This would have been a fine short story, and Smith writes really well, with an acerbic sense of humor that is actually funny. But the relentless digressions and left-wing politics, jokes, and even Dick Cheney showing up with a gun and stalking the narrator into the past—well, it was all a bit too much. The first chapter boded well; it was sort of a plot mess after that.

Been a while but I remember this as completely charming and a lot of fun.

Trite. Simplistic. Boring. Not nearly as interesting as the advertising.
—Dara
One of the most touching and funny books I've ever read.
