Rented Mule, The: A Novel (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Finally I finished the book. Bought it as part of the kindle first program. I have enough book log of already popular books so at times I use this opportunity to try new, relatively unknown authors. This was one such. After finishing the book, I can say that the book is very loosely knitted. It has breaks very often for example, for a book of 300 odd pages, it had more than 100 chapters. So the storyline jumped a lot. At times the book felt captivating specially towards two thirds of the book, but most of the time it is not very compelling. ALthough it is a detective story, the book and the main solution to identify the killer was based on coincidence. More over, the motive of the killer was not very clear as well to go such great length. I am little bit disappointed to read the book, but it can be written better. From the first page there wasn't a character that I didn't consider, on the face of it, a "loser". That prepared me for what I thought would be a lousy novel. I recant my first impressions, at least on the principal characters. By the end of the book I had to admire them for their willingness & courage, not only to face up to their shortcomings, but for their determination in changing their lives together. The chapters were fairly short…a feature that I like. Bobby Cole has given us a righteous story & keeps it moving through the 500+ pages. There isn't a lot of mystery in most of it, but it kept my interest. I'm certainly open to exploring some of his other works.
