An easy read. If you don't already know about India's educational cramming system and the all-pervasive corruption involved in setting up crammer colleges, it provides bit of an eye-opener. If you do already know, or suspect, you're likely to relish the humour with which Bhagat traces the rise of his ne'er do well anti-hero from exam failure to success as director of an engineering college. However, the simplicity of style means that the book cannot really qualify as a literary classic. Characters were slight. I didn't predict what the outcome of the story would be: in fact I thought things were going to take a much bleaker turn. If they had, I think this would have made it a much more powerful book. So, it's satire, but not the most disturbing of satire. The prologue and epilogue were ineffective, and not having them might have improved things. Also, a spot of editing was needed to make sure that the appropriate verb tenses were used throughout. In summary, an accessibly presented tour of an important issue which might prompt some important people into action. Certainly worth reading, but not a literary classic. First of all let me tell you i am not a novel reading person but my friend recommended it , so i gave it a shot. And I was stunned . I am doing Engineering , I understand how it feels when you don't clear an entrance exam. Pressure of failing your parents expectations . Chetan Bhagat has done an excellent job in showing how hard it is in India to become an Engineer (Good one). Best part is a normal person like me who tried very hard to clear an engineering entrance exam and got failed will understand the feeling of the character Gopal. Love triangle was also good to read . Gopal is ready to do anything to show his love to Aarti. My conclusion is every engineer should read this novel at least once in his/her life.
