Rich Like Them: My Door-to-Door Search For The Secrets Of Wealth In America's Richest Neighborhoods (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
The idea here is a promising one: he goes knocking on doors to ask rich people how they came to live in such fancy houses. There are some interesting stories here from which you can draw your own conclusions and ideas. The author’s own conclusions are sketchy and skewed. For instance, he deduces that rich people tend to be "open to opportunities" but of course those types of people are the ones who were most likely to let him in the door, right? He also includes an awful lot of filler about himself, particularly how much walking he’s doing, which doesn’t belong here. This is a well-written book that says a lot and at the same times nothing new. The moral of the book through my eyes is as follows:1. Rich people aren't that different. Many of them of once like you and me: smart people with motivation and a few good ideas.2. Keep your eyes and mind wide open.3. Always carry a notebook: use it to write down both any ideas that come to you and your goals in life. This way you will be able to keep a record of your ideas and track your progress in life. Both are essential for the ultimate success.4. Every stranger has the potential of becoming a friend, business contact or at least an interesting chat partner.5. Luck is as good as the one you make it.6. For those of us with real estate passion, the book reiterates the old RE investment strategy: Find the cheapest house in the coolest neighborhood, fix it a bit and sell it for more.7. "Obsession comes when passion blooms, fertilized with hard work, cleverness, shrewdness, and everything else that makes a person want to follow a dream. " (p. 104)8. "Anticipation is evolution's way f guiding us toward rewards, and it rends to de more intense than the actual gain." (p. 125)9. Don't be scared from failures; simply evaluate the reasons for the mishap and be ready for the next opportunity.10. "Humility is one of essential and surprising ingredients of success." (p 200)

Kind of funny but I did not think any of the ways people in his book became rich was a secret.
