Rocket Men/The Epic Story Of The First Men On The Moon[Paperback,2010] (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

This book was very enjoyable especially for a person who participated in the space race and personally have many friends who also did. Many of the events and names in the book I remember clearly. The most interesting part of the book was the post moon discussion. This country is still adrift trying to find its next destiny. I learned that the moon is rich in helium-3 a powerful energy source. This holds great promise for the earth. There is no doubt that we will eventually return to manned space. This is because this planet we live on has a limited time as does the sun we are circling. If we do not go into space and beyond this galaxy we will disappear, along with all the history of this great earth. When the right conditions align to a group of driven people it is incredible what they can accomplish and in doing so propel mankind to new worlds. Should in a thousand years, those who inherit the earth from us may look back at the age of the Apollo missions with the same wonderment of our accomplishment and we do of those men who built the Pyramids. I appreciated the personal NASA personnel interviews, the seemingly inconsequential inside stories (that when put together weave a richer story), how the author chose to spend time focusing on the Russians who we shared the space and missile race. In doing so, the writer puts us in the 1960s with the drama of set backs and the greatest of accomplishments. The stories of what happened to the first two men who landed of the moon upon their return are thought provoking. Their lives after the landing re-tell the old adage that accomplishment is a double edged sword. Nonetheless, despite their personal challenges, it is encouraging to understand their desire to return to space if they only could.I recommend a book like this to any generation. For those who lived it as a great reminded of what the country accomplished, to my generation so that they can fund and encourage educations of the generations to come who should look to the skies and get us to the next great destination.

About as accessible an account of the Space Race as you can find. I've now read this twice.
