Another masterpiece by Joanna Bourne. If you like historical romance at all, read this. I think Joanna Bourne is something of a writer's writer, in that if you mention her name among romance authors, especially historical romance authors, you are likely to get a squee-fest. These books feature all the usual romance catnip--hot, dangerous heroes circling warily around the hot, dangerous heroines that they love, and plenty of angst about troubled pasts thrown into the mix--along with a fabulous sense of time and place and some of the best writing in the business. I am becoming the most MASSIVE FANGIRL of Joanna Bourne's use of language. In particular witty banter - nobody does it better. Nobody. The best part is, you don't sense that she or her characters are straining for the laugh. It's all off the cuff, flowing along and utterly glorious.Aside from all that, sure this book is a great romp. There are bad guys, kick ass heroines, best friends, true love, intrigues, elderly aunts, criminal elements, exquisite hats, and finally the ugliest sideboard in all of Europe. What's not to love? Now that Joanna has ruined me for other authors, I will attempt to find something new to read this weekend. It won't be easy.
What do You think about Rogue Spy (2014)?
Heavy on the spy saga, light on the romance. Still good, but would have liked a little more romance.
