It really was quite an interesting book. Very insightful dialogue between the characters & being set in New York was really good. I am familiar with some of the sights (such as the Statue of Liberty, etc) that Yuena (the Russian girl) sees before she moves back home to Moscow.I also really enjoyed how the main character, Rose, overcame her shyness (just like me) and befriended Yuena. Yuena appreciated the new friendship with Rose as well as the friends Rose began interacting with...whom all became an amazing group [of friends]--despite the troubled tension time periods that it was back in 1982 between the USA and Russia--during the Cold War. I definitely recommend readers to read this novel. Rose has a very sad soul. She lost her only friend just by choosing to go to dance school. She wanders everyday to school, during school and from school. Her passion of dancing is starting to turn into a confusion of her fate. She has a Soviet neighbor named Yrena that she's never talked to, but suddenly one day climbs through Rose's window to come meet her. They immediately discover that they were the perfect match and this would be a whole new beginning. But because of the conflict between the US and USSR (Soviet Union) during the 1980's, getting around together may not be so easy. But because of the strong and curious heart of Yrena, Rose decides to take her downtown NYC at night, something most New Yorker teenagers would do . Yrena discovers so much and the amazing NYC. Soon later, Yrena's curiosity turns into stubbornness and is not willing to leave. She wants more of american lifestyle and parties. But after discovering Yrena's fate, Rose sees everything in a more beautiful way. She can see beauty in darkness. Beautiful NYC. But how will she face the consequences of being in downtown until so late with a Soviet?
