A Virgil Flowers book...the newer series spun off from the Davenport "Prey" series. Flowers is an investigator to whom Davenport assigns "only the hard cases." Virgil thinks he is off duty on a fishing trip, until a wealthy backer of the Governor is murdered in a nearby lake resort.Suspects abound: love triangle (lesbian or straight; paid or not--take your pick, they are all on the table); country band jealousy; dis functional back country family; or some mysterious business deal rooted either back in the city, or at the resort itself.Flowers uses his usual mastery of detail to sort through the suspects, and (barely) gets the right person. As usual, Sandford is a master of the narrative, making you turn page after page to see what will unfold next. We meet up with Virgil Flowers for the third time in Rough Country (with a Lucas Davenport chaser - yeah!)Virgil is at northern MN when Lucas calls him to investigate a murder at a resort that caters to women where one of the patrons is shot while kayaking. He finds woman who are looking for women, a country western band, and assorted locals who help and hinder the investigation. There is love, murder, jealousy and family drama with Virgil trying to locate the killer before he is killed himself. The closer he gets to the killer, the more suspects he finds. These women who are at the resort are tough, resourceful and smart. The end has an interesting twist that will make you want to hug your children and tell them you love them.
