Royal Street (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

3.5 stars. Wizards working to keep the paranormals in the Beyond but of course, they want to come over here. After Hurricane Katrina there are weak areas allowing breaches. Dru needs to help fix those breeches and find her missing mentor. This book is a love story to New Orleans and since I love NOLA, I was fascinated by the setting, the description of the destruction and the historical figures who keep busting into our present day. That was so fun! But there was a little lacking in our hero/heroine relationship, and the story stalled here and there so pacing was kind of off. But ultimately I will read the next one, I am curious where the story goes from here and whether the characters will flesh out a bit more fully as books move on. But if you like New Orleans and paranormal (they go hand in hand!) then check this out. Just read it when you are patient. I would rate this book more of a 3.5 stars but didn't feel right rating it a 3. It was slow but necessary as the author was fleshing out the characters and the situation. Since Hurricane Katrina was such a huge part of the story more time is spent on this situation to give you a feel of the situation. Having experienced Katrina myself I felt that the author did an excellent job with this. I made it through the book and while I did struggle with having to pick it up to read I am glad I did. This book was necessary to get to the meat of the story that comes in the 2nd and 3rd book. I do feel that the 1st book should definitely be read for background purposes but that might be my series OCD coming through. I would definitely recommend it.
