MAY CONTAIN SPOILERSThe book starts out strong - fun banter, hot characters, and lots of scary drama. But somewhere along the way I was super annoyed with Emily, and Jake made too many mistakes & I had to knock him off his pedestal. Emily uses Jake one night in a club to get rid of some sleazy mobster type hitting on her. Jake's lips against hers turns very heated & its on! She follows him into a back room & sees something she can't unsee. Now a witness to a major crime Jake checks her into witness protection. Jake & Emily have quite a bit in common - Emily was in & out of foster care & has some major abandonment issues. This is the first mistake for Jake, when Emily constantly makes smartass comments & Jake asks if her parents ever taught her any manners. Not nice! Jake recently lost his parents & is out for revenge. Emily throws herself at Jake constantly which was odd, makes her seem promiscuous. "I'm responsible for your safety." "Then wear a condom!" Seems desperate. Shacking up in the backwoods of Texas with Jake's relatives tests their relationship even further with Emily throwing tantrums like a toddler & making rude remarks. But then she cries when Jake dances with his former high school love Bobbie Jo (Emily calls her Bobbie Jugs which is hilarious!). Emily's abrasive attitude is the armor she wears to protect her heart because she is serious about Jake. Unfortunately he acts like she is his star witness, not terrified that the woman he loves is in danger. Jake says some very cruel things to Emily that he won't be able to take back. And when Emily unravels the clues to the mobster drama Jake doesn't believe her. I almost bumped up my review a notch because of the epilogue which I really enjoyed! Jake got his head out of his butt & lets Emily know how he feels about her. This book was ok but I definitely missed the connection between Emily & Jake, I wasn't feeling it unfortunately. I really, really wanted to like this one more than I ended up actually liking it. It had some great one liners and I did enjoy 'Emily's' spunkiness. My huge problem though was Emily was so annoying! She would constantly overreact to everything, was insanely jealous, and it ended up being just 'too much'. Jake was great for the most part, though his quick temper was a bit of a turn off. Really though, my biggest thing was I didn't understand what Jake and Emily saw in each other. I never felt the chemistry. I am hoping for some other stories...maybe Cowboy? I'd still give the author another shot. And it wasn't all bad, I didn't have to put it down at all so that says something there.
