Hannah said. “Your face is finally clean of blood. Now I can get to work.”
Mack was grateful for her matter-of-fact statement. It helped him concentrate on something besides how she might take care of him on the floor.
“How do you know so much about first aid?” he asked once she finally took the washcloth off his face and he could straighten his neck. He winced. His neck was stiff and sore. Very sore. Probably from that thug bashing his forehead into the floor.
“This is not just first aid. Some of it is second aid.” She smiled. “I was a lifeguard at the lake for three summers. I’ve handled my share of small emergencies.”
Mack assessed her. “Ever dealt with a big emergency?”
She shook her head. “The worst thing I saw was a kid jump off the tall diving board and land on the low board. I didn’t have to do anything, though. Someone called 911 and an ambulance came.
