Saugatuck Summer (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Very good, well-written and angst-filled book. The angst wasn't over-the-top, but just enough to make you a little teary-eyed and really made you feel for the characters, especially Topher. To start, I really liked Topher and Jace. Their chemistry was incredibly hot and that bathhouse scene... GUH. So good! I also loved how they both went through the same issues and came out of it. Now, I'm going to be the odd duck here and say that I felt bad for Brendan. I know, I know, he should've known better, he was married, Topher was his daughters BFF... But I have a soft spot for characters just coming to terms with their sexuality, be it early or, in his case, late in life. It happens and the struggle is real. He was stupid for perusing it (they both were, obviously), but I think in his mind, it was what he needed atm... What they both felt they needed.I really think that Brendan started developing feelings for Topher, and I think that's what made me feel for him. Topher handled it well, but I don't think he respected the guy's feelings. It was all, "Ugh, he's so creepy!" Honestly, I don't think what Brendan did was creepy, but more... Opportunistic on his part. I feel like he missed being with Topher, knowing things would never be the same again, so that's the only thing he had to cling to. He still had hope, and when we find out that hope he had was crushed, my heart broke for him.I know, I'm weird. I can't help it.... I would've liked input into how everything was being handled on his end, but the story wasn't about Brendan. Hopefully one day, there will be. I'd love to read it. I really did like the ending and I'm glad we got some closure with Brendan. Like I already said, The Odd Duck here would love to read more about him. Here's hoping. :-) Topher is a mess! He grew up with an alcoholic, emotional abusive mother, an aunt and uncle who belittled and hated everything that made him who he was, and then he has an affair with his best friend’s married, closeted father. Enter Jace, an artist he meets on the beach and has an amazing night with. He thinks he’ll never see him again, but right after everything with his friend’s father implodes, Jace reappears. With Jace’s help, Topher is able to start healing and forgiving himself for the mistakes he’s made. Throw in some super-hot sex (the bathhouse scene WOW!!!!) and you have a really great book!
