Saving Cicadas (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

I saw this book when I was in a museum shop in Charleston. The back cover was intriguing and It was local author. Add to that an autographed copy so I grabbed it up. It took a little while for it to make it to the top of my to -be- read pike. So glad it did! What a story. I love to read Jodi Piccoult and Anita Shreve. Both authors throw the reader for a loop just like this book. It grabbed me and flipped me like a roller coaster ride. Piccoult always deals with controversial topics and this book does deal with a controversial topic so close minded people-leave this book on the shelf. It is creative with its use of perspectives and quite the mystery right up to the end! Not easily forgotten! Ugh. Seriously?I'd like to leave it at that, but I will just warn that Seitz has a clear agenda with this book - to try to make others see abortion "through the eyes of a child," (the book is written at a low reading level - not sure if it is actually intended for a school-age audience?) even comparing her message to that of Harper Lee's in To Kill a Mockingbird, which is just... misguided. Abortion's a sticky issue, and it's certainly not black and white, nor an issue that most children would be able to fully grasp, as Seitz would like you to believe. I would encourage Seitz to give Lee's book another read through; maybe she will take away a different message this time: that people's views can sometimes get weighted down and closed off by preconceptions and inadequate information, and that sometimes those views would benefit from being revisited. That being said, everyone is entitled to their own, informed opinions. I just hope not everyone decides to write crappy books about them. eek! sorry.

very poignant...and took on the issue of abortion from a voice I've never heard

Wow! Amazing story. Read it, but don't read anything about it before you do.
