Say Nice Things About Detroit (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Objectively, this book was not very well-written; the characters were one-dimensional and repeatedly made huge decisions about their lives in the span of two sentences, which I found annoying. But of course, the use of Detroit as a backdrop (really, as a character in the story) sold me. I'm obviously biased, but this is so much more interesting than rehashing the experiences of people in NYC, LA, etc. that we've already heard a million times. didn't love this book. in fact it bothered me the entire time I read it because of the constant depressing undertone... which I suppose in many ways is part of the point. one of the references to Detroit felt too forced and that bothered me. and it also took about 75% of the book before it really got to the plot as mentioned on the book summary. while there was some honesty in the writing, this one just didn't hit the right notes for me.
What do You think about Say Nice Things About Detroit (2012)?
Really fun if you are familiar with the greater Detroit area.
