SCJP Sun Certified Programmer For Java 6 Study Guide (2008) - Plot & Excerpts
Here is the thing, want to prepare for the SCJP 6 exam? This is the book to read. It tackles each of the 38 objectives of the exam in great detail and a very neatly-organized 10-chapter structure. The book assumes no prior knowledge of the topics, just that you know your way around Java programming- compiling and running programs. The only chapter that might feel a bit messy is the I/O section (chapter 6), but if you know your way around Java I/O you will have no troubles with it. In short, SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Study Guide is a must-read for any SCJP 6 hopeful. Get that book. Time to go back and review all the various changes that have happened to core Java in the past few releases. The book is huge (800+ pages)! I am highly impressed with Sierra and Bates, the authors. But despite the great, and much appreciated, efforts of the authors, it is not always the most enlivening of reads. Chapter 2 and 3, in particular have proven to be, as we used say in the Army, 'sleep aids'. However, chapters 4 and 5, as they get more into the meat of the language, seem to have been more interesting. I do wonder whether the SCJP books would benefit from a change in format. The 'classic' format is ten honking-huge horse-pill style chapters, many close to or exceeding 100 pages. And each chapter wallowing across multiple subjects. Possibly the material might benefit from more numerous and smaller chapters directed towards specific points. Sort of that 'cohesion' thing. ;)Whatever the formatting decision, the material would be the same. And I am diligently plowing through it. I suspect that I will need at least one more pass to understand it all thoroughly. Particularly some of the newer features, such as generics, which I have never needed to use.
