Screwing The System (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I feel badly for not liking this more. I'm really not sure what happened. It has many MANY ingredients I like-a corset, impact play, big guy bottoming, some dirty talk. It should've been a slam dunk, but I just never felt the magic. It's a quiet sort of story about Cosmo, a twenty something musician who's floundering around. He's a musician and has a band but doesn't feel challenged by them or their musical tastes. He's bratty but not all that self-assured. He's getting governmental assistance and basically tanking interviews to keep his benefits when he meets Alasdair. Alasdair is a self-made man. He owns his janitorial business which he built with his own hands, along with his partner, Mavis. When Cosmo comes in for a fake interview sparks fly between them. Alasdair has been throwing himself into work to the detriment of his social life since the death of his partner. Cosmo's brattiness is reminiscent of his former partner, but as their relationship evolves it becomes more about Cosmo fitting into Alasdair's life now and helping him find closure with his past. It's very relatable and oftentimes humorous and I did like it, it just didn't leap off the page for me. At first I had trouble taking this seriously. I love a good book and obviously this had some of the elements I enjoy in such a book: bdsm, a snarky bottom, class-difference, and humor. But for some reason, I didn't find the first half engaging enough.Halfway through is when it gets good, I was all smiles by this time. Hardly any angst. I loved how Cosmo and Alasdair just slowly eased into a relationship that they barely even noticed it... it just happened.
