Second Chance (2005) - Plot & Excerpts

Fiona is a successful editor in chief in a fashion magazine Chic, who had everything she wanted she was 42 years old not married and without kids, she was not in the mood to raise children, she was, in reality, afraid that she will not do a good job about it that’s why she never wanted to get attached to people, because in the end there is no ‘’forever’’. One day she had a meeting with the head of an ad agency, John Anderson, who was in his fifties, handsome and wear suit that suit him perfectly. After the meeting, he was fascinated by her to a point that he decided to invite her for lunch, after the invitation for a lunch she invited him to the fashion week in Paris, and that when both of them fall in love reciprocally. At the same time, John knew how crazy was Fiona’s life and she will not be willing to make it calmly especially for a man, but Fiona did some compromises and invited him to ‘’stay with her’’ for the summer period in her house that hadn’t closet space to his suits, despite the difference of their life, both of them were living in a paradise until his daughters come back to New York, they knew that their father is now, like they said, destroying the memory of their dead two years ago mother, and they had menaced their father that they will never come back as long Fiona is present is his life, John don’t seem that his daughters scare him and he choose to convince Fiona for marriage. Fiona had a screwed childhood, her father abandoned her, her mother got four marriage failures and her stepmother rapped her, she has all the right to become furious toward people and not have faith in marriage but deep inside her she was In love with John and she trusted him. After marriage everything seems to change, Fiona had a lot of crisis in the office and travelled lots, while her house was full of Jamal (her housekeeper) ‘s awkwardness and her silly friends and with whom she work’s bullshit, in fact, one of them, a photographer, was screwing two hackers and a drug dealer in her house, and when John come home he was disgusted of what he saw and decided to go back to his apartment. When Fiona came back from her trip, she knew that something terrible will happen, and it was true, John was willing to get a divorce because of the chaos in her life that he couldn’t stand in the end, after a period of six months together. Fiona felt broken, she decided to move on and go to Paris to write a book, she quit her job and let her dearest friend, Adrian, to replace her in the magazine. She felt better while she wrote the book where she told her deepest stories and how she felt in her 44 years old life. When she decided to go back to New York to sell the house, find and an agent and visit her friend she saw John with a new woman, and when she got back to Paris he called her. They get married again as a way to show to themselves that both of them deserve a second chance. In the second Chance, Danielle Steel had shown another part of women, the kind part. Fiona changed from the though woman to a loving woman that was supposed to make compromises to keep John next to her, but do we really need to make that as a response to our fear of the loss?Well, that wasn’t a problem, because John deserves to be perfectly treated. What I loved about the book is that I felt it; I imagined every second of it I was deep entertained the details especially. What I didn’t like it was the end, it was too quick, in the first we used to know every details, every whisper and every move, but the last three pages were awkwardly quick, despite of that I felt what I feel after every good book, I will miss Fiona and John.

I love Danielle Steel and her books but this one is below my expectations. It starts pretty good but somewhere along the way it becomes all about the closets and clothes the main character does not want to give up. And than it becomes really weird and boring. Somewhere near the end I had hope that it will end in Danielle's style - great! but no. I was really annoyed with the last few pages where all you can read is that she will not go back to the way it was with him and then, of course, everything changes in just a few lines.

What do You think about Second Chance (2005)?

Danielle Steel's books have been on the New York Times bestseller list for 6,298 years, she's published 50,942 books and they've all been made into movies that all enchant our hearts with their heartwarming tales of romance and family life... or something - I'm parafrasing here. It stands to reason she must be a brilliant writer or else how could she become that popular? I'll tell you how: the world isn't friggin' fair.I'm sure a lot of people enjoy Steele's books because they're romance and the

Admittedly I haven't read a lot of Danielle Steel books lately. One thing I have always counted on until now has been the depth of the stories (and characters) that she writes. I know that at some point in time in the book I'm going to be curled up with a box of kleenex as I'm going to cry but I also know it won't be for long. This time not a tear was shed, the characters didn't seem to have as much depth as others she has written and while it was an enjoyable book it didn't affect me as much as her other books have.

As much as Danielle Steel novels are all about romance, I found this one to be a bit different, and I found the characters to be likeable. Although the part about the man's grown children's and housekeeper's reactions to the new woman in his life to me seemed a bit farfetched, I was glad the way things worked out in the end. There was much anticipation building because I was almost sure that there would be no happy ending based on the turns the characters' lives took. But then again, I've never read a Steel novel that ended sadly!
