Section 8 (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Though I had every intention of staying with the full experience, I had to cut it loose. Even half-way through, there was still no connecting plot, the characters were indistinguishable apart from the obsessive detail of the shades of their skin color (or the fact that the protagonist "sucks her teeth" on almost every other page), and the descriptions were vulgar miles past the point of being offensive. Yes, I know the characteristics of street lit and I'm willing to acknowledge the appeal to readers, but I was under the impression there would also be a story.audiobook note: At first I was impressed with the clear, strong voice and talent of inflection, but the production value of this is sorely lacking. Regularly there are long pauses mid-phrase, as if the performer lost her place for a moment. Though common in recording, I'm sure, most have the sense to do another take. The fact that the hitches only increase in frequency leads me to believe that the producers decided the audience for this book isn't worth the time or effort to do it right. That, too, is offensive. This book is about three different groups. There is Resse, Yoshi and Billy. They have had enough tragedy to last a life time. After having some close calls they are ready to fall back. Tech, Silk, China and Animal are notorious street thugs. All they know is the streets. Animal a philosophical killer has a chance to make it out but his comrades don;t have that such luck. Last there's Tioona, Gucci, Tracy and Boots. Tionna promised never to return to 40th street in Harlmen but, when her husband is sent to prison she is subjected to the projects and finding a way. Gucci is your average hood star. Classy and never trashy but knows what the streets are about. When she meets Animal her eyes expand to another horizon.Tracy and Boots are products of their environment. With that being said they still find a way to survive.I liked this book because it had a lot of suprises. It was very intriging. It is a very good read. The first Hood Rat book was good but this book was great. The story is so real and people have really gone through these things. I reccomend thsi book to mature readers.
