Selected Works Of T.S. Spivet (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Artwork and aesthetics are very entertaining, often interesting too. The story, although affecting (as with almost everything that adequately explores tragedy), is somewhat generic and almost wishy-washy in comparison to its frills. There are lots of nice bells and whistles in both descriptive prose and illustrations, but they're weakened by shallow thematic content. Still a fun and occasionally touching read. I loved this novel. You should borrow it or buy it to see the illustrations, diagrams, maps and sidebars. TS is a 12 year old genius from Montana. His mentor sends his maps to the Smithsonian and TS wins an award meant for adults. Thus starts a journey by himself- hobo style across the country. Seeing what a 12 year old packs is funny and there are many revelations about his family through his mother's journal. The book comes together with TS's poignant acceptance speech. An almost perfect book with quirky, brilliant, and very human moments.

Great book, a great adventure. After reading the book the movie (3D) really is worth watching.

It went off the rails a bit in the last 100 pages. An all together illuminating ride.

Enjoyable read, a bit like if Wes Anderson wrote a book.
