So many scathing reviews of September Girls...I actually loved it. The magical realism of the story charmed me. I really felt ALL of summer throughout this book. The sun, the anticipation, the subsequent boredom, and then the dread that rolls around in August when you realize it’s almost over. It was soothing to me. Yes, there is language. Yes, there is cheeky banter between adolescent boys. I didn’t find it offensive, just human. I loved the “Girls”. They were just overall dreamy, and most of my favorite passages were when they were speaking as a collective. Am I just partial to this story because mermaids were somehow involved? Maybe. Deserving of neither such praise, nor such censure, as given by many of these reviews. The book is clumsily written, swerving widely and abruptly between teenage dudespeak and lyrical mermaid pseudo-philosophy. I don't get all the sexism complaints -- if you are under the impression that it's unusual for a 17 year-old boy to be obsessed with his own dick, then you have never met one. But the overall story is nicely paced, romantic, and perhaps even a little bit insightful. Not a bad coming-of-age summer read.

Interesting mythological tale with a lovely, lyric voice.

Would have liked it more with less excessive profanity.
