Sewing Green: Projects And Ideas For Stitching With Organic, Repurposed, And Recycled Fabrics (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
Everyone wants to be more green and here are some great ways to get on the bandwagon. From sandwich wraps to bags and wallets, home dec and clothing, there are many cute projects here using recycled materials or new materials that will replace expendables. The photos are great and while the upbeat descriptions make it sound easy to walk into a thrift store and find 4 coordinating cashmere sweaters to de-construct and sew to create a beautiful throw, that hasn't been my experience. But you will be filled with ideas, and will certainly have a project in mind when you find a great fabric weather it is new or used. Good introduction to ideas about repurposing materials and using economical and environmental ideas for simple projects. Some interesting stories about individuals working in green textiles, although I would prefer to see more projects and fewer and shorter stories. However, if you're not into felt or plastic, this book is less useful, as that rules out over half of the projects. I also have concerns about the environmental and health effects of using Polyurethane laminated fabric for food-holding/serving projects.Available through San Francisco Public Library system.
