(2007) - Plot & Excerpts
A love story - not entirely my cup of tea unless there is a great historical background and plenty going on in the plot. BUT this book did win me around...It took me awhile to get into it as the 1st half seemed to take a long time. Then I realised that the backdrop of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Class and the "Comrade Army" had a massive impact on how a young woman behaves, how she is seen by others in their small community and reflections on the family etc...Overall I did enjoy the story overall - early on it felt repetitive, but then I understood the reasons for those circumstances and even through the difficulties that arise, it is the backdrop of that time and the culture of China and it's people that have huge influence on how people act, despite their feelings or because of the feelings for the person they love... a good read.
