This book was hard to get into and I almost gave up several times. Nothing about any of the characters was believable. Ryder: There is no way a guy with enough money to be set for life would work in a coffee shop, even just for something to do. He came on WAY too strong with Harper. Completely over the top with his declarations. There is absolutely no excuse for stranding her at a hotel, 30 minutes away from home, after she spilled her guts to him the night before. None whatsoever. If his daughter has been rushed to the hospital, how is it Harper finds him and the child's mother, casually chatting it up at the coffee shop, a short while later? He expects Harper to bare her soul, but shuts down when the tables are turned. Barking at a waiter, demanding the penthouse suite, cheating on his wife; to sum it up, Ryder is a total ass with possible multiple personality disorder.Harper: What parents, no matter how uninvolved, would watch their daughter's personality, appearance, and friends do a complete 180 and no nothing about it for four years? Unbelievable. Forgiving Ryder so easily after he left her at the hotel is practically a cry for help. Skye doesn't even tell him off for hurting her best friend when she finds him in Harper's apartment. Within the first meeting of Harper, she’s a reckless young woman with multiple sexual partners and encounters and it makes you wonder hmmmmmm, what’s her back story, what broke her? Her best friend Skye is the perfect supporting friend trying to take care of Harper while not prying into her past. Skye has her own issues and the two women know exactly how to deal with each other. They have the perfect balance of a loving relationship.“I bought you this so you cannon say no, eat it. Chocolate makes the would go ‘round; chocolate and coffee should be everyone’s answer to everything.” “Tell me what happened, Skye”You see their love and concern for each other through out the story. They have a lovely, easy carefree, sarcastic, funny banter, which makes reading the dialogue entertaining. It makes you feel like you’re talking to one of your own girls. (Well for me anyway)“To friendships, new and old! May we all get laid tonight!”Ryder, Ryder, Ryder…AhhhhhhhSo yeah, when we first meet Ryder, he’s a gorgeous man working in a coffee shop. Immediately the sparks fly between him and Harper. The second meeting of Ryder, he’s the mystery man that Harper “makes love” to in dance moves at a club, but freaks out when she’s assumes the woman’s name tattooed on him is a significant other. The third time we meet Ryder he’s coming to Harper’s rescue in a club bathroom, and gets to Harper just in time. Ryder says all the right things. Everything that a woman wants to hear, he’s perfect.“I haven’t stopped thinking about you. I needed to know who you were. You’ve captured my every last thought.”So this gorgeous man slinging coffee with a tattoo of a woman’s name, will he be enough to break down all of Harper’s walls that she’s built up to keep her heart protected all these years? Can Ryder be the man she can confide in and help her repair herself from an abusive past? “I was fucked up and fucked up people don’t date. People like me end up messing up relationships.”Harper works at a small high-end boutique for a woman named Rita, who has been very good as a boss and friend to Harper. Rita’s advice is honest and blunt. (I found a little of myself in Rita) She gives the motherly words, with a kick in the ass at the same time. Which proves to be exactly what Harper needs at times.“Sometimes, Harper, we need someone to lean on. Someone who can share in our love and help us find each other. Sometimes, we need to share our souls with another to find ourselves.”Some of the inner thoughts Harper had made me chuckle out loud getting funny looks from my husband across the room. Such as…“Hello, my name is Harper. I am completely and totally fucked up and you probably will regret ever meeting me, but I would love to fuck you before you go?”Come on? Seriously, that’s just awesome! Some one-liners that will melt your heart…“I will never leave you…ever. You’re too beautiful and broken for me to just walk away and never look back.”Sigh“You are my sunflower. You are the person I look up and admire. You are the person I vow to stick beside until you no longer let me and even then, I will always be there for you.”Oh Ryder…. Where are you lol He just says all the right things.Without giving too much away (Hope I haven’t already) this is a great story. It provides hope to broken souls that think they are not worthy or love or happiness. There are some really wonderful motivational conversations that can make you realize that you are only human. Mistakes happen, but how you recover from those mistakes it what defines you as a person. Thank you V. Murphy for reiterating some words of wisdom I had lost sight of. I hope you enjoy Harper’s journey for love & happiness as I have.
