I went into this book expecting something of a standard romantic werewolf romp, but was (pleasantly) surprised to see that it developed into more of a story about the heroine finding her place in the world, with the juiciest bits focusing on her family and early home life rather than our staple sexy alpha.Terra was a very enjoyable heroine, with plenty of charming wit, a nice character arc, and a host of personal problems to work through as the story progresses. There's a nice amount of compelling werewolf lore to be found sprinkled throughout the book too, but the story never feels like it gets bogged down by it, using fun little tidbits like the idea of "bloodling" wolves (you'll have to read the book to find out what those are!) to reinforce the personalities and expectations of certain characters, along with the always-engaging elements of werewolf social hierarchy that most fans of the genre should be familiar with.Shiftless was also very well-paced for the most part. This is something that always scores big points with me, since so many novels have a tendency to get bogged down in lengthy segments devoid of conflict or engagement, but not so in this case! Each chapter usually had something new waiting around the corner, with some fun little twists and turns along the way (particularly at the beginning and end), and I never found myself bored by what was going on.The subject matter isn't particularly heavy in this novel -- it never gets too dark (though there are some grim hints here and there to add tension), and the romance stays within the realms of sweet and cuddly rather than going down the intense/erotic path. Great light reading, doesn't overstay its welcome, and provides a neat self-contained story while also setting setting up a sequel for those hungry for more! I have a secret love for paranormal books. I LOVE anything werewolf, but I am somewhat bored with the super possessive and overbearing Alpha male. However, I did not realize this until I read Shiftless. I thought I was content with this type of relationship, just coasting along thinking this was the way things were supposed to be. I did not know what I was missing.Terra is our main character, and she is tough as nails, dominate, but accepting and loving. She had a tough life, suppressing her wolf just to get by and stay under her father's radar. Meeting Wolfie and his pack was the best thing that could of happened to her. Which brings us to my favorite character... I loved Wolfie and how he was with Terra. I loved that he was possessive, but not in the cliche overbearing, chauvinistic way. I love that he was sure of himself, confident, laid-back, and not just brooding in the corner and snapping at his pack.The family dynamic with her nephew and brother in law was fantastic, and perfect for the structure of Terra's story. I was kept interested all the way through, which sadly has been rare for me lately. This has now topped my list of favorite books in the paranormal genre.
