Shucked (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I received a copy of this novel, courtesy of NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. This book is a cute and easy 3.5/5 star read. The novel focuses on 15 year old Tabatha, who has led a life full of adventure, and is now forced to go to an American high school in the Midwest. It was a mixture of slice of life and chick lit, both of which I enjoy. There were times when the novel tried to have high stakes action, but I found it fell a little flat for me. I found that the idea of a Tabatha’s best friend, Becky, being able to hide how gorgeous she was simply by braiding her hair and wearing glasses a little far-fetched. Tabatha also brings up the fact that she has a black belt far too many times throughout the book. Overall though, I found the novel interesting and an enjoyable read. I only read 15% of this book, so the review will be short.I couldn't get into the book, because it was truly ridiculous. Not in the good way. I couldn't stop rolling my eyes long enough to read more than a sentence at a time. We have insta-love, insta-friendship, and a protagonist who really, really likes to tell us how great she is. (I strongly object to all of those things). It goes something like this. "Dude, my mom abandoned me, even though I'm awesome and can do taekwondo. But at least my grandma loves me, because I'm tiny and adorable. But she's making me go to school, where I'll have to interact with a bunch of NORMAL kids who think wrestling calves is as cool as wrestling alligators, because they're all backwoods hicks and I know taekwondo. But hey, a model wants to be my best friend, probably because I can play a symphony with my pinky toe while doing taekwondo."After the girl randomly does taekwondo on her crush five minutes after they met, I gave up. I mean, my second grader knows not to use taekwondo unless being attacked, and he's only been doing it a few months, unlike our supposed grand master protag. Just one thing after another, each one more 'out there' than the last. I have too many books on my TBR pile to continue something that irks me so much.
