Silks (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

I gave this book a three star rather than a two because all though it was okay, there was just enough mystery in it to say, I liked it. As so many reviewers here, I've been a big fan of Dick Francis for years and enjoyed the horse/racing aspect being a horse caretaker (they really own us, don't they?). "Silks" was an okay mystery, a bit long on the legal aspects, or rather different from Mr. D. Francis' approach. Missing also was that humor he brought to his writings. Although the book was a good read for me during a lazy holiday, it wasn't one I rushed to get back to. The protagonist and antagonist were well developed; I had empathy for Geoffrey Mason the lawyer, protagonist, which says a lot because you know all the lawyer stories, and true dislike for the horrible Julian Trent, the bad guy. The love connection between Geoffrey and his new interest, hmm, kinda short on "for real?" Never-the-less, the premises of the crime and solving it were decent. I wish Felix Francis all the best in his writing career (not easy to be an author, honestly, in this day and age of so many books), and I might read another. This isn't my favorite Francis mystery. Something I can't quite describe yet feels "off" and heavy in this work. Perhaps it is the legal jargon presented in an unnecessarily complicated way. That being said, the description of the equine culture in England, from the morning training routines to the festival atmospheres of the great racing events, is as beautiful as ever. Someday. It is all still on my personal bucket list.

What do You think about Silks (2008)?

The ending was a little like falling off the last stair after an endless flight down.
