“Kate,” I said, struggling to sit up. “Just stay put. You fainted.” The image I’d seen earlier rushed back into my head. “Oh my God. Is he dead?” “Who?” The sound of a familiar voice drifted in my direction. “Is she okay?” Detective Obermeyer. I pushed the EMT out of my way and sat up, relieved. “I’m fine. What happened?” He pointed a finger at me and drew his eyebrows so close together they looked like one. “I told you to stay in your house!” If I were a dog, this would be the time to cower and pee on the floor. “I’m sorry. I was worried.” “It’s not enough I’ve got a massacre to deal with in there, you have to show up and pass out!” “Massacre?” “What time, exactly, did you have your run in with Dash Zucker?” “Why? What happened?” “Just answer me!” The muscles in his jaws clenched so tight I could see them bulging under his skin. Having never seen him this angry before, I decided not to push my luck with any more questions and just do as he asked. I went into rewind mode and played the entire morning over in my mind. “About seven this morning.”
