Snow Falls (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

A nice quick read. But nothing extraordinary. The characters are sweet, like they usually are in Gerri Hill's novels, and it's hard to dislike them. They're not without flaws and that's what makes them very real, and quite endearing. The pace of the romance is good, with a nice build up and good chemistry. Again, that's typical of Gerri Hill's romance novels. What's also typical of her novels is the setting: a cabin, a broody butch who doesn't want to get attached, a confused femme, mountains, snow, dogs... and that's what bothered me with this. I get tired of reading about the same things over and over again. Despite being usually good love stories, Gerri Hill's books are almost all very similar, and very predictable. Some are surprising and original, but Snow Falls is not one of them.Unfortunately, Gerri Hill is also a very good writer who can write about beautiful feelings and positive romances, and that's why I can't stay away. A lovely romance to while away a Sunday afternoon! I am a fan of Gerri Hill – I have read her Police procedural series ‘Hunter Trilogy’ which were very good mysteries. SNOW FALLS is totally different – it is a romance and I picked it mainly because it had snow in it – for this little snow bunny wannabe who lives in the tropics any book with snow on the front cover is fair game. The two main characters are both reclusive but for different reasons, one is rich and infamous, the other withdrawn and shy after a strict upbringing. Jen has written a successful series of self-help books which she never reads or takes advice from; Catherine (Ryan to her friends) has won a Pulitzer Prize and is working on her next book. Although Ryan is resigned to sharing her cabin with Jen for six to eight weeks, she isn’t willing to share information about her past with Jen, or reveal that she’s a writer herself, she does admit to being an editor and helps Jen learn the craft of writing. The two women spend the next few weeks writing and talking about everything except what is important. Gradually Jen realises she is not missing her fiancé and the idea of leaving Ryan is distressing. But leave she does and Ryan now has her solitude back, but she finds she doesn’t want to be alone anymore.Gerri Hill is a very good writer, and she has an uncanny ability to create believable characters. She is also very good at setting the scene, and she managed to transport this reader to the mountains with breathtaking descriptions of the winter scenery. I enjoyed the development of the romance and was glad that there was finally a ‘Happy ever After.’ The story of how the two women get there is what makes Gerri a good writer.
