This is the first Donna Andrews book I have read. I listened to it as an audiobook. It is extremely cozy, which is not a bad thing in small doses. Since I have not read the series and this one is number 10 or 11 I am sure there are back stories and relationships I am in the dark concerning. However, it was well written with likable characters. It is an easy to listen to book making it perfect for my daily walks, where I can listen without having to concentrate on the plot, where I can follow the story easily. The town courthouse has been seized by the "evil lender", the mayor has been recalled and has fled to Mexico, and the county clerk has barricaded himself in the courthouse basement for the past year. The townspeople are supplying him and guarding a secret tunnel they use to ferry things to him. But when a murder occurs outside the barricade, it looks like the clerk may be forced out, leaving the town vulnerable to the lender. Fun... possibly more fun if I had started with #1 in the series rather than this one. But Andrews probably deserves more kudos... maybe 3.68 stars, because despite me starting in the middle the story didn't lose me or bog me down with excess backgrounding, and I finished the book feeling like I hadn't missed anything. Well, save for maybe the gorilla suit. I mean you're a cop who wears a gorilla suit when stressed? Something about that doesn't compute. All in all, a nice little romp through a village of unique characters. I believe I'll be back for more -- perchance I'll even take the time to hunt down #1.
What do You think about Some Like It Hawk (2012)?
It's what you would expect from a book in this series.
