She knew exactly where to find him, sending the letter to the correct address, when most people from his past would have thought him untraceable. As for her, she had sent no return address. That was her way though, even when she was a child — a touch of imperiousness, a certainty that made opposition seem unthinkable. A bank of dun-coloured cumulus cast sullen shadows between the horizon and the thin surface of the lake.
