Sous Couverture (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I loved this book. This story had all the ingredients for a 5 star read for me --- engaging, sexy, alpha males, undercover FBI and cops, nail-biting suspense, dark, dark underworld criminal activity, and a can’t keep track of the good guys/bad guys bait and switch by the author. Ty, real name Gabriel, goes undercover to entice human trafficker, Demetrius, in order to get close to him, and ultimately arrest him and break the back of his operation. Of course, this would not go smoothly, and Ty is found out but offered a chance to work with Demetrius to capture Arden, his co-second in command under crime lord Galo. Demetrius wants to take Galo down and is willing to help Ty get Arden out of the way. Once again, none of this goes smoothly as deceptions, intrigue, and sadistic cruelty abound throughout the story. Without giving away any of the plot spoilers, and there are many, I’ll just say that this finally came to a satisfying conclusion after what really amounted to a roller coaster ride of emotions – both mine and the MCs. I’ve never read anything by this author before and I’m so impressed with this that I’m going to watch for other works from her. My only negative about the story was that she kept referring to a penis as a member. That makes me crazy and always pulls me out of a story, usually by laughing, and that just makes the otherwise hot sex scenes weird. Once or twice is okay, but constantly was just too much. I’d reduce the overall stars if the story was so terrific, but I’m leaving it at 5 stars. I listened to the audio book of this one and I must say, while it was mostly good, the laugh and simulated sex sounds the narrater immitated annoyed me so much that I made the audio book go faster (so the laughter was shorter) and might not have connected with the character (especially Dim) as much as I would have needed to to really root for them in this hard to swallow but well written tale. This book had many twits and turns and the reader didn't know until the very end what the real truth was. there were some logic holes, but it was a mostly very engaging plot. However, it was very dark and while encouraging ibteresting thoughts, it also made my stomach turn. I'm still not quite sure how to rate it, but I know that the great writing and interesting and twisty plot deserve at least 3 stars. Right now with the queasy feeling I got from the plot and my inability to really connect with Dim, I can't really give the story 4 stars, though. So I'm gonna award 3.49 stars, rounding down to 3. If you don't mind stories that seriously challenge the way you see the world and push your boundaries, you might wanna give this a try. Probably better to read it, though ...
