Split (2006) - Plot & Excerpts

I was lucky enough to meet Tara Moss last week and this is why I read Split, as I'm not a huge crime reader, even though she herself recommends her new YAL Pandora English series. But she was so charming and interesting that I wanted to see what she writes. For someone who finds Bond film plots difficult to follow, I cottoned on pretty quickly to Mak Vanderwall's dilemma. I read it in two short sessions, enjoyed the references to Canada (a place on my 'to visit' list) and the feeling of claustrophobic terror that she did manage to evoke. Makedde is a likeable heroine even though she is mainly ridding herself of her own psychological hang-ups rather than sorting out crimes and mysteries. Maybe the intense descriptions of bound, tortured and hunted women is an analogy for everything a model has to go through in her career! Very cosy and readable and I would dip into another to see what Makedde does next now she is free of her demons.

I have just reread The Fictional Woman by Tara Moss, as it was my choice for my book discussion group, and thought that I should at least try one of her crime fiction books to get an idea about her fiction writing style, before our meeting.I therefore read Split quickly and found it an easy to read novel with a good story and fast pace. The writer did over explain in places which could be her style or a case of too much tell and not enough show? (Show don't tell...). Nevertheless I did like her characters, they are flawed i.e. normal. The idea of the twins looking after each other seemed a bit far fetched but then we have had a recent crime in Australia where one twin helped to try to cover a murder committed by his brother! I also liked the cross between Vancouver and Australia. I will certainly try a more recent novel

What do You think about Split (2006)?

Makedde Vanderwall seems to get herself in the line of fire from serial killers, first she became a victim a Stiletto Murderer while visiting Australia and in this book too she becomes the target for another serial killer – could that really happen in someone’s life?I don’t understand her feelings for Andy, she is attracted to him but keeps fighting it because he helped her from being killed while she was in Australia and she has a hang up over that. For me there was too much in depth discription of Foresenic Science and Psycology - I don't think the story needed all that was said, for me it would have been better without it.Though the story itself was not bad.

I'm still trying to decide whether I really like this author's style. She tends to explain a bit too much which rather slows down the pace. Nevertheless when the action starts happening she keeps the pages turning and there is plenty of suspense. I don't really get the Makedde / Andy issue even though I did read the previous book where all the problems started. Someone as strong as Mak is supposed to be surely could make her mind up over a mere man. Still a good book and I will read the next one.

I enjoyed the overall plot and the way Mak thinks as a character. I felt that the first half of the book was pretty convoluted because there was so many point of view changes. I am not entirely convinced that all of the characters with points of view were even relevant to the story. Once the book got further into the plot and the individual character stories were converging, the book picked up speed quickly and became more enjoyable. From the beginning, I thought something was off about Roy Blake and that he would be the killer, but I was interested to see that Tara Moss added yet another twist, making it a less predictable read. Ultimately her relationship with Roy ended up saving her life. I would recommend this book series to adults who enjoy crime novels. Start with the first book Fetish, or a lot of this book wont make much sense.
