Stardines Swim High Across The Sky: And Other Poems (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Prelutsky, J. (2012). Stardines Swim Across the Sky and Other Poems. New York, NY, USA: HarperCollins Publishing.Good for K-3Summary:After a long expedition across the world, the author returns with several creatures that he invites the world to enjoy with him. The stardine, the bluffalo, the wedgehog, and many many more. Awards:Booklist 12/01/12Kirkus Reviews 02/15/13Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books 05/01/13Publishers Weekly starred 12/24/12Horn Book 03/01/13Curriculum Connections:This book would be good for second grade's Unit 7: Poetry Unit. The big idea is "Identify literary techniques used in poetry, such as showing not telling, precise words, sensory details, comparison, and formatting". Where this book is the strongest is in it's sensory details. I love Jack Prelutdky but this is one is definitely my favorite now. I totally misread this as Sardines until I actually read the poem. He takes an animals name and changes a letter: sTardines, bLuffaloes, Tattlesnake, and so on. Fantastic poems with great vocabulary words! But it's the mixed art illustrations by Carin Berger that's AMAZING! Can't wait to show it to my two kids who are both graphic designers. LOVE THIS BOOK!

What do You think about Stardines Swim High Across The Sky: And Other Poems (2013)?

Fun poems. The word play on obscure animal names can be a little advanced.
