I'm still reading, but just had to say that the cover doesn't match up with the story AT ALL. One would think that there'd be someone in charge of making sure the art went with the story, but clearly, whoever that was hadn't read this book. I was a paragraph in when I realized that the main character (with the 'coal black hair') was not the woman depicted on the cover. And it didn't take reading much further to see that the 5 yr old looking girl and her yellow dog on the front didn't go with this story either. I realize this has nothing to do with the author's literary skills, but it was a slack/lazy move on the part of the publishers. You'd think someone would have proofed that before production. I stayed up well into the night finishing this story.. But admit it was more out of a determination to finish then finding the book positively riveting and impossible to put down. I don't think I'm a tough critic when it comes to reading. I love books, love reading, and don't often come across stories I dislike. This one is no different.. I didn't dislike it.. But I didn't love it either. Despite a plethora of plot-lines, I found it dry. It might have been the writing style.. I never seemed to quite get into it. That being said, Garlock did manage to create characters that both had my heart go out to them, or evoked an audible "ew" from me. I wasn't a fan of the relationship between the two main characters. Despite it's justification and the reasons behind it, I wasn't able to totally accept it.. However, all in all, it was still a sweet tale.
