Stick Dog (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

How I Found It: It’s nominated for an Intermediate Golden Archer award, which is a Wisconsin book award that is given out by kids for the best book of the year. I’m teaching Golden Archer this week, and I read this book to find a read-aloud section. What I Thought: Disappointed by this book. The picture books that are nominated for the Primary Golden Archer award are usually very good, so I was excited to dive into the intermediate nominees. I thought it would be a funny and clever book, but it was really neither. I didn’t find a lot of laughs in this book, and I thought the writing was rather sub par. I understand that it’s written in a child’s voice, but still I’ve seen that done much better than this. The first chapter was promising, but it really didn’t go anywhere from there. I’m interested to see what my students think. I’m wondering if this is a case of the humor just not connecting with an adult. But, like C.S. Lewis said, “A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.” I was able to find a short read-aloud section, but other than that, I didn’t really enjoy my time with this book—good thing it only took about an hour to read.Rating: 2 stars out of 5. This is a great fast read by Tom Watson because of the intention to read more of this book. My favorite part of the book was when Karren the wiener dog went to the or her trash can to get a appetizer before they took the burgers from people at a park. I mostly liked the book, but I'll give some suggestions for him. I think you should/he should make more additions to the story like make more usage of the page. There were also some great strengths of the book like putting pictures on the page that matches the paragraph or words on the page. I think I would recommend this to a fictional, fast read to a person that is interested in fictional stories.
