Stolen Songbird - Negeri Troll Yang Hilang (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Ugh okay I liked this book. It was enjoyable. The plot was engaging, the characters had some depth, and the book on the whole kept me interested. However, it annoyed the living crap outta me for many reasons.A. Heroine Obsessiveness With Mandatory Brooding Guy Who She Cannot Have So Naturally She Will Want. This is something of a disease among YA books, and truth be told, it gets annoying after the first five hundred times you've read basically this exact thing in slightly different situations. We have your obligatory innocent young woman who is special in some way and does b.a. things sometimes and yet still manages to set your teeth on edge with her patheticness. Then you've got your sexy dark haired pale skinned moody Fae boy with an attitude problem and a scientific degree in being nasty and making the heroine think he doesn't like her. But of course at first he's all EW YOURE HUMAN HOW COULD I POSSIBLY FALL IN LOVE WITH A HUMAN. Hon please. You gonna fall so in love with that and we all know it. So at first they hate each other, then they start to tolerate each other, THEN BOOM OUT OF NOWHERE ATTRACTION and after a bunch of almost kisses and unnecessary misunderstandings they finally admit their feelings and junk. And my reaction was just like, ...bleeeeeeeh I don't caaaaaaaare. In all honesty I was far more invested in the jealous warrior troll chick and the damaged heartbroken cousin than in the two main characters. Don't get me wrong, the storyline is pretty unique. And if the author had used their imagination and created new characters the likes of which I'd never seen before, this book would have gotten five stars. But they didn't. They fell back on the cliches. It was a bit disappointing. I've read this love story before, okay? There is absolutely nothing new there. I can literally list all the books in which this exact same romance plays out. Frankly, it was boring. B. The Villain Is Evil Because Evil. Tsk tsk. I was disappoint. The Evil King has no motives other than making everyone miserable and keeping power in the family. But WHY?! I want to know what makes him do what he does. When the book switched to Tristan's POV I assumed he would elaborate on his father's reasons behind what he does. Why does he personally hate half bloods so much? Why is he so interested in keeping power in his family? What are his fears? Who does he care about? Does he want to break the curse or maintain his cursed kingdom? All these things are unclear. You're giving me an antagonist who is evil for evil's sake. A good novel makes it hard for you to choose between the villain and the hero. He breaks your heart with the villain's story and motives and presents the idea that in the villain's eyes, he's the hero. This villain just makes me want to duct tape his mouth or knock him unconscious or just tell him to bugger off because he's annoying me. C. Christophe. Don't you dare get the wrong idea. I love Christophe. I just hate the way he was presented. Author gets to the end of the story and thinks "Crap, man I forgot the arbitrary childhood friend who's in love with the MC!" *shoves Christophe into story and makes him hold Cecile's hand and pressure her into thinking that Tristan is evil* NO. YOU CANT DO THAT. YOU CANT MAKE CHRISTOPHE DO STRANGE THINGS TO ADD MORE DRAMA WHEN IT DIFFERENTIATES FROM HIS CHARCTER. NO. That's not okay. Be original. He's a sweet guy. He does sweet things. D. Cecile Is Selfish. She really is. And it's irritating. Therefore I can't like her. Sorry not sorry. If you can put up with all this, you'll enjoy this book. I love fantasy books so much, especially ones with wit and fantastic characters and beautiful worlds. This book had all of these, I was laughing out loud and I enjoyed every bit of this. Reading a fantasy novel has the power to make you feel like you're really in a whole new world and it's lovely and exciting and I was so sad when this book ended, but I was so pleased that the book held up it's great story from beginning to end and it kept me entranced all the while.
