Sun and spoon is a book about a boy named Spoon who is 10. Two months ago Spoons grandmother died and Spoon doesn’t want to forget her. Spoon is one of three kids including his sister Joanie who is six and his brother Charlie who is twelve. Charlie flies out west during the book while his sister Joanie always wants to tag along. Spoon wants to find something of his grandmothers so he can remember her. He goes to his pa’s house to find something of hers. He then finds a deck of cards with suns on them. He steals them and takes them home. Already he felt closer to her but guilty because he stole them. tThis book puts you in Spoons position in relief that he finally found something but guilt because he stole them. The book takes you along in their journey everywhere they go. It is about him finding what is the right thing to do. Does he returns the deck of cards or keeps them to make himself happy?tI personally did not like this book because I felt like during the book it explained more of what he was doing on a day-to-day basis then what the book was really about. I wouldn’t suggest this book to most people unless you like books that explain what they are doing everyday instead of the plot of the book. tI would suggest this book to ten and older because it’s not very long and is easy to understand.
"Nice" comes to mind when I think back about this book. It was a pleasant read. I can see how it would really appeal to any child/family grieving over the loss of a beloved grandparent. Then, I think, this book would stand out for the reader. As for me, while I found the writing good enough, its story line didn't grab me, nor make me want to read more about the main character Spoon's further adventures. Now if Henkes wanted to explore Joanie, Spoon's sister, in further depth, I'd be interested. All in all, a good but not memorable read; highly recommended, though, for anyone dealing with a death in the family.
What do You think about Sun & Spoon (1997)?
This book was really touching. I really liked the main character. His name was spoon, (yes ik weird name...) and he was really close to his grandmother. eventually she died, and spoon was trying to find something that would remind him of her. the whole book is about him trying to find his grandmothers past and trying to find something of hers. i actually really liked this book!! u may remember kevin henkes from some of his old childrens books...and i think Chrisanthium. (is that how u spell it??)
