Suri's Burn Book: Well-Dressed Commentary From Hollywoods Little Sweetheart (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
How I Came To Read This Book: Robyn introduced me to the Suri's Burn Book blog some months ago and when I saw there was a book (after laughing my way through the Tumblr) I requested it from the library. The Plot: Is it fiction or nonfiction? Tough call - I'm landing on the side of nonfiction, because although the book is from the fictional perspective of a well-bred Suri Cruise, her tongue-in-cheek sartorial skewering of celebrity children is decidedly nonfiction...ish. The book is basically 'Suri's' thoughts on some of the world's most famous children - who's doing it 'right' and who's doing it 'wrong' in terms of style and profile, but like I said, it's all in hilarious good fun. The Good & The Bad: I think the Tumblr format ultimately serves this concept better than a book. The more you read the book, the less it felt like you were reading the snipings of a six-year-old (a very well-educated and cultured one, granted). The short snippets of the blog are just little punctures of fun, while the book becomes a little...harsh...when read in one sitting. Because there is SOME truth to what faux-Suri is saying, and there is definitely something wrong with US for being so fascinated with these children (that's actually kind of the point, granted). I don't know. I just felt a little weird reading the book, even though I really actually enjoyed it. Would I recommend to people who haven't read the blog? Not so much - you'll miss a lot of the in-jokes (in fact in some ways, her attitude toward certain nemeses like Harper Beckham felt tamped down). The Bottom Line: Totally silly fun, if you can get past the slight 'wrongness' of the whole thing.Anything Memorable?: Oops. I guess this book went to print before July, when Tom and Katie divorced (it was released in September). There's a few sardonic references to their everlasting love...60-Book Challenge?: Book #56 in 2012 If you read the blog you will enjoy this book!I did think that some jokes went a little too far, and there was some duplication of families/kids throughout the various sections. My only complaint is that the book is so small. I was expecting a 6x9 softcover with big pictures (ie picture on one page then writing on the next page), and the book is a 5x7 hardcover with small pictures interspersed with the writing.
