She planted a quick kiss on Merokk’s cheek before taking her seat across from him. Breakfast was already spread on the table, an assortment of Kall fruit and, to her surprise, some traditional American breakfast food. “Pancakes, bacon, eggs? Really?” The cooks hadn’t served Earth food in this house once, not even when President Carson had visited. “I’ve decided to make some changes around here.” He smiled and reluctantly placed a pancake on his plate, grimacing at it like a child staring down a plate of spinach. Laughing, Fiona eagerly reached for the eggs and bacon. “It’s not so bad, I promise. A lot of your Kall food tastes quite similar to our native fair.” She winked and took a bite of bacon, and the crisp, burned meat suddenly reminded her of home—of her mother. She hoped Merokk would permit her to visit Janie, but she was nervous about broaching the subject. Two days had passed since he’d forgiven her for her part in the deception against him, and everything between them seemed perfect—almost like a fairy tale.
