Surviving Goodbye (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Okay, I really didn't like the main character in this book. His wife died, she told him on her deathbed that his daughter wasn't his biological daughter. So he spent the next year having a giant pity party. He neglected his daughter, lost his job, and then finally decided to find the biological father. He hooked up with a delivery woman and then let her do the searching while he decided to get it together with his daughter. Okay, that part was nice. Then something happened where he went back into pity party mode. And really, the use of the "F" bomb was so totally over done. It really spoiled the book for me. He was not a gangster on the street type of character, he was a "white collar" type of guy. . . let's make love, not "F. . . " . . . seriously!!! The ending was a surprise, so that made it worth finishing the book. I was given this book for an honest review. This is my favorite Morgan Parker book to date! I absolutely loved it from start to finish. I was hooked immediately and could not put the book down. It is well written and the characters are very well developed. The dialogue is authentic and tangible. I felt as though I were watching the story unfold before my eyes as it was easy to follow and connect with. Elena is dealing with the loss of her mother and the fact that her father has basically stopped living. Eliot is trying to grasp the weight of Karen’s deathbed confession and what the truth really is. He has essentially shut himself off from the world and doesn’t even realize what is going on with his daughter. He meets Veronica when she delivers an interesting package to his home that is meant for his daughter. The reader is then taken through the journey of grief and overcoming loss. The book is absolutely amazing and honest. The love that unfolds from the characters and the lessons of life it teaches are beautifully composed. This is one of my top picks for the year! I truly loved this book!
