Don Gyepesi, or whom we call Captain Gypsy, can be a cynical, grumpy bastard. He’s put in many years and is close to his retirement but I don’t see him going anywhere any time soon. Other than my father, I respect no man more than him. He’s dedicated his life to this profession and he’s trained some of the best. He’s taught us all we know. Tonight, we also have Mikey sharing our meal with us. He’s a special needs boy who has been coming to this station as long as I have worked here. He helps out where he can and we accept him as one of our own. Whenever we get a call he closes up behind us and waits by the radio until we get back. “How’s your steak, Mikey?” Austin asks. Since his mouth is full, his response is a thumbs-up. “Mikey likes it,” Cam mocks, sending a collection of chuckles around the table. Feeling my cell phone vibrate in my pocket, I reach in and pull it out to see a text from Sam. When I open the message, a picture of a basket of peaches pops up that says, got peaches?
