Tajemnice Rutherford Park (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
A wonderful book that depicts the lives within a country house on the cusp of a new age.Cars are beginning to make an appearance and WW1 is looming with the young son who has ambitions of being a pilot. It starts on a snowy Christmas Eve 1913.One of the maids Emily is in trouble which has devastating results. How the family married for money to improve the estate, a tale of class and manners. If you like Downton Abbey you'll love this, I couldn't put it down! This was an Audible Audiobook and as an avid reader as well I'm always struck by how different a book is when it's being read to you. I did like this quite a bit. The narrator was perfect, it was written well, interesting characters and plot lines while predictable were still interesting and engaging. The period before any war is so interesting as everyone knows once the war is over life will never be quite the same again and this holds true for any massive war whether the American Civil War or WWI. There was only one thing about this that bothered me and I thought it would go away once the book had ended but it hasn't and so this is **********************SPOILER ALERT***************************I honestly do not understand why Charles (a) showed up at Rutherford Park when he knew all along that William wasn't his father and (b) why he took "revenge" on the Cavendish family through Louisa when he knew all along that William wasn't his father. William had supported he and his mother their whole lives so what was there to avenge? Absolutely nothing. Honestly it doesn't make any sense at all under any scenario unless Charles was a deranged schizophrenic. I guess the author had to devise some plot line to tear the family apart but honestly for me this just didn't ring very true. And that's why this is 3 stars not 4.
