Thanks For The Feedback: The Science And Art Of Receiving Feedback Well (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Stone, D. & Heen, S. (2014). Thanks for the feedback: The science and art of receiving feedback well. New York: Viking Penguin. For those who want a really in-depth and empirical look at feedback, this is for you. For me though, this was a little too verbose and prattled on a bit too much, despite its best intentions to over-communicate. Two things learnt:Highlight good norms, rather than negative onesRequest to be at higher-level interactions: learn from those you want to be I love books that notice a missing piece in the literature, as this one notices how much advice is out there for giving feedback, but not for receiving it, which may be even more helpful. Since we all find ourselves in both positions, it is helpful to read as a feedback giver as well, just to understand what's happening in the feedback conversation for both interlocutors. I actually LOVE the book jacket. At least on the hardcover version I had, the yellow square even FELT like a post-it note in the middle of all that high gloss, and yes, the humor evident in the pencil markings, yellow note etc, carries through the book. As for my choice of rating, there's a long sample conversation in the book about a getting a 4 versus a 5 in a performance review rating. This book just "feels" like a 4-star to me, but it might turn out to meet my 5-star criterion (life-changing), although I think I do pretty well with feedback (I have been assigned certain clients at times for that very reason--they were known to use review boards and pass along copious and often disparate feedback, so I took care of those clients for four projects...). So it might be more life-tweaking for me. And even though they capture some humorous feedback situations very succinctly, the book did start to feel too long by chapters 12 & 13. Chapters 12 & 13 are good, and worth plowing through, but maybe some of the middle could have been tightened up.

Typisch Amerikaans lang uitgesponnen; desondanks zeer leerzaam en confronterend.
