The 4 Percent Universe: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, And The Race To Discover The Rest Of Reality (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
To be honest, this was a bit of a letdown. The title is a little misleading as it is more about "the race" and the history that sets up the race than anything else. The book is 240 pp and doesn't really even begin hinting at dark matter/dark energy until the 150s/60s, and it is really more about the scientists who are racing for discovery than it is about what they do, and don't discover. There were just enough interesting points and narratives to keep me reading, but this is a difficult book to recommend. I didn't find this book particularly enjoyable. The story mostly focuses on the people doing the work of cosmology. While it was interesting to learn about how the field was born, the animosity between astronomers and physicists (which I never knew about), and some of the characters involved, it was ultimately not what I was hoping for. There was not enough time spent on the subjects and concepts themselves, and I often felt myself left confused and left behind as the story rushed forward.
