The 5 Elements Of Effective Thinking (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

You might feel overwhelmed at first with all the info and all advice in this book. But I assume we already use some of the tips suggested in this book, unconsciously. All in all, book offers good ideas and tips, getting to use them all at once would be somewhat challenging. Using anything from it would make your learning easier...if you learn for the sake of learning, and not just to pass the exam. ^^ This wasn't the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - my yardstick for such self improvement books. Perhaps I'm somewhat jaded. Having been in the education business for more than twenty years, I've looked at dozens of these kinds of books. Many have offered good ideas in digestible packages from which I have taken buzz words and concepts I've used. The problem with this book for me was that as I read, I found myself thinking "oh, that..." which I already know and use.I did like the way the authors relate the 5 elements (air, water, fire, earth and void) to the five major habits of mind they are selling. These are broad general concepts that are solid. Again, my issue is that I have this stuff not only from older pop literature but also from serious study of pedagogy, curriculum, learning, thinking, neuroscience, psychology... A civilian or newbie might really like the structure of this approach to meta-cognition. At 160 or so pages, it was a very quick read. I can see this being a useful toolkit for improving thinking or teaching students how to be more effective students. I just didn't find anything I didn't already have.

It was a good little read, very great information. I will definitely read it again.

As pop science books go, this one is like a short, swift kick in the ass.
