The Almost True Story Of Ryan Fisher (2008) - Plot & Excerpts
I read this book on a lark. It turned out to be a great read and had a great, albeit odd, story. In a nutshell amazon sums it up better than I can:Meet Ryan Fisher---a self-assured real estate agent who's looking for an edge in the market. While watching a news special late one night, he sees evangelical Christians raising their hands in worship. It's like they're begging for affordable but classy starter homes. Ryan discovers the Christian business directory and places an ad complete with a Jesus fish. His business doubles in a week. But after visiting an actual church, Ryan realizes that with his business savvy, he could not only plant a church---he could create an empire. The Almost True Story of Ryan Fisher is a hilarious, spot-on, and often heartbreaking satire in the tradition of Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Perrotta, and Douglas Adams.Even during slow parts I had to know what was going to happen. I had to know what decisions were going to be made and by who. Or how said decisions were going to be found out or thrown back into another person's face. Worth a read. Just know, it is weird. It is not your typical story with your typical characters that develop from point A to B. These people take odd twists and turns, and make decisions that may take them all the way to point F before they make it back around to B. Read it! I got this book for free on my Kindle when I first bought it. I needed something to read last week and this ended up being it. I don't know if it was the Kindle version, but the editing on this thing was HORRIBLE. Spelling, punctuation, spacing, even the spelling of famous people's names was wrong. And the story was, gosh, I don't know, but I found myself incredulous that the main character could be so naive and cocky and just unaware. I know this is supposed to have some lesson or something but to me it was a waste of my time.
