She came in by the front door and waited, looking at the merchandise until Ellen rang up purchases for two customers and they left the store. “Good morning,” Ellen said. Gail smiled shyly. “Good morning.” She looked as if she wanted to say something, but she just stood there. “Is everything okay upstairs?” Ellen asked finally. “Bathroom working? You have enough hot water? The hot water heater is getting finicky.” Gail smiled again. “It’s all wonderful. I love it up there. Did you know that through the west window you can see all the way to the farms on the far side of Lincoln Road?” Ellen could hear Dinah rattling around in the kitchen, making an early lunch. Ellen had to take over the customers at two, while Dinah did her weekly grocery shopping. Dinah’s sister always shopped on Wednesdays, too, and the two would enjoy coffee and a visit afterward. When Gail didn’t say anything, Ellen smiled at her.
